I discovered Oriana’s work thanks to a suggestion from a fellow artist.
When she told me about her art (printing marine algae through chemical processes using sunlight), I immediately felt the curiosity to learn more, and above all to understand its inspiration.

As an artist, I have always been drawn to the idea of art connected to nature and the environment, and in Oriana’s work I found this connection to be incredibly powerful, deeply resonating with me. Not only because it speaks about the sea, but because she is able to perfectly intertwine her artistic expression with the context that inspires it.

The “total presence” she refers to when immersed in the ocean, within kelp forests, is exactly the metaphor of what it feels like to create authentic art—leaving a mark from a state of deep awareness.

And then there is the sun.

Which she uses as an artistic tool, through the cyanotype process, to create the images of her subjects. This is a detail that makes her work truly unique, because it is entirely created through nature itself. A powerful synergy between two artists working together in deep harmony.

Ho conosciuto il lavoro di Oriana grazie al suggerimento di un’amica artista.
Quando mi ha raccontato la sua arte (la stampa di alghe marine attraverso processi chimici grazie alla luce del sole) è subito nata in me la curiosità di saperne di più e soprattutto di comprenderne l’ispirazione.

Da artista sono sempre stato attratto dall’idea di un’arte legata alla natura e all’ambiente, e nel lavoro di Oriana ho trovato questo legame davvero molto potente, riconoscendomi pienamente. Non solo perché parla di mare, ma perché riesce perfettamente a legare la sua espressione artistica in totale armonia con il contesto che la ispira.

La “presenza totale” a cui fa riferimento quando è immersa in mare, nelle foreste di kelp, è esattamente la metafora di quello che si prova quando si crea un’arte autentica, capace di lasciare il nostro segno in uno stato di consapevolezza profonda.

E poi c’è il sole.

Che lei utilizza come uno strumento artistico, grazie alla tecnica della cianotipia, con cui crea le immagini dei suoi soggetti. Questo è un dettaglio che rende davvero unico il suo lavoro, perché nasce interamente servendosi della natura stessa. Una sinergia potente di due artisti che lavorano insieme in profonda armonia.

The place where your work begins. 

What kind of space is it, and what does it quietly give back to you while you create?

All of my work comes from the ocean and from my experiences in and around it. The photographic contact-printing processes I use allow me to collaborate with nature, enabling the marine specimens I collect from my dives to record themselves, creating their own portraits through sunlight, shadow and photochemistry.

In return, the process gives me a sense of connection, experimentation, humility, and continual discovery, reminding me that the work is not only mine, but shared with the environment and the species that create it.

Il luogo in cui nasce il tuo lavoro. 

Che tipo di spazio è, e cosa ti restituisce mentre crei?

Tutto il mio lavoro nasce dall’oceano e dalle esperienze che vivo dentro e intorno ad esso. I processi fotografici di stampa a contatto che utilizzo mi permettono di collaborare con la natura, consentendo ai campioni marini che raccolgo durante le immersioni di registrarsi da soli, creando i propri ritratti attraverso la luce del sole, le ombre e la fotochimica.

In cambio, questo processo mi restituisce un senso di connessione, sperimentazione, umiltà e scoperta continua, ricordandomi che il lavoro non è soltanto mio, ma condiviso con l’ambiente e con le specie che lo rendono possibile.

When you are creating, what happens inside you? 

Is there a feeling, a rhythm, or a silence that accompanies your process?

Entering the ocean is how all my work starts, and it's different every day. It requires you to be fully present, with a calm, quiet focus, and allow the weight of our constantly-connected daily lives to drift away.

My favorite place to be is floating in the kelp forest, surrounded by shifting light, living forms, and the immense power of the sea - filled with movement, uncertainty, and awe. There is excitement and heightened awareness in these moments, and the feeling of being completely alive inside an environment much larger than myself.

I try to carry that energy into the printing process, where sun, water, and light physically create the work, and each print becomes a way to hold onto that moment in time and space.

Quando stai creando, cosa accade dentro di te? 

C’è una sensazione, un ritmo o un silenzio che accompagna il tuo processo?

Entrare nell’oceano è l’inizio di tutto il mio lavoro, ed è diverso ogni giorno. Richiede una presenza totale, una concentrazione calma e silenziosa, permettendo al peso della nostra vita quotidiana, sempre connessa, di dissolversi.

Il mio luogo preferito è galleggiare nella foresta di kelp, circondata da luce in movimento, forme viventi e dall’immensa potenza del mare — uno spazio fatto di movimento, incertezza e meraviglia. In quei momenti sento entusiasmo e una consapevolezza amplificata, la sensazione di essere completamente viva dentro un ambiente molto più grande di me.

Cerco di portare questa energia anche nel processo di stampa, dove sole, acqua e luce creano fisicamente l’opera, e ogni stampa diventa un modo per trattenere un momento nel tempo e nello spazio.

Every path carries its own weight. 

Is there a difficulty you’ve had to face as an artist, and how has it shaped the way you work today?

Every artist encounters obstacles, and I try to reframe them as parameters for problem-solving. When I first began creating very large works, it required extensive experimentation to achieve the results I imagined.

The need for scale came from my subject itself, as the giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) can grow over 100 feet (30 meters) tall. My largest pieces to date are 17 feet (over 5 meters) in length, so I still have a long way to go before I create a piece that illustrates the entire being of one fully grown stand of giant kelp!

Ogni percorso porta con sé un peso. 

C’è stata una difficoltà che hai dovuto affrontare come artista, e in che modo ha influenzato il tuo modo di lavorare oggi?

Ogni artista incontra degli ostacoli, e io cerco di rileggerli come parametri per risolvere problemi. Quando ho iniziato a creare opere di grandi dimensioni, è stato necessario un lungo processo di sperimentazione per raggiungere i risultati che immaginavo.

Il bisogno di lavorare su larga scala nasce proprio dal mio soggetto: il kelp gigante (Macrocystis pyrifera) può crescere oltre i 30 metri di altezza. Le mie opere più grandi finora raggiungono i 5 metri di lunghezza, quindi ho ancora molta strada da fare prima di riuscire a rappresentare l’intera essenza di una singola foresta di kelp completamente sviluppata.

If art were a word you carry with you, what would that word be — and why? 

Tide (marea)

It reflects the movement, power, and flow of the sea. I don’t feel that words are the best way to explain experience, but my work is shaped by forces I can’t fully control, and its meaning develops through sustained attention and presence, and revisiting an environment over and over again.

Se l’arte fosse una parola che porti con te, quale sarebbe — e perché? 

Marea

Riflette il movimento, la forza e il fluire del mare. Non credo che le parole siano il modo migliore per spiegare un’esperienza, ma il mio lavoro è modellato da forze che non posso controllare completamente, e il suo significato si sviluppa attraverso un’attenzione profonda, la presenza e il continuo ritorno allo stesso ambiente.
